Malvern Instruments acquires Viscotek Corporation
Thursday, January 17, 2008
Malvern, UK: Materials characterization company Malvern Instruments has acquired Viscotek Corporation, a leading provider of chromatography solutions for the characterization of natural and synthetic polymers and proteins.
Malvern Instruments is a world-class supplier of systems for the characterization of particulate materials, providing complete application solutions across a broad range of industries. The acquisition of Viscotek brings new and complementary technologies and expertise into the company, adding Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Flow Injection Polymer Analysis (FIPA) and Dilute Solution Viscosity (DSV), and extending the range of characterization solutions offered.
Paul Walker, Managing Director of Malvern Instruments said: “Viscotek has a long-established reputation for innovation and quality, and there is a close and complementary fit between the Viscotek product range and Malvern’s, for both protein and polymer applications. This acquisition will increase the characterization capabilities of Malvern’s existing nanometrology product lines.”
Viscotek Corporation, headquartered in Houston, Texas, was founded in 1984 by Dr. Max Haney, inventor of the four-capillary differential viscometer detector. “Since its inception, Viscotek has pioneered innovative technologies and products for gel permeation chromatography of natural and synthetic polymers and proteins, and determination of dilute solution viscosities,” he said. “In recent years Viscotek has experienced exciting growth. The powerful alignment of Viscotek’s products with the Malvern range will provide even more opportunity to comprehensively meet a broad range of customer needs. I am delighted that the company has become part of Malvern Instruments, where I am confident of further development and a thriving and expanded business.”
Expanding on the complementary nature of the two companies’ product ranges, Paul Walker went on to say: “In the biomolecular arena the addition of Viscotek systems alongside our existing product range will further inform physical biochemists of the structure-function relationship of proteins, important in determining disease mechanisms for example. In the field of industrial and pharmaceutical polymers, Malvern will now be able to offer complete characterization solutions, essential in the development of new functional polymers that meet the demands of increasingly complex drug delivery systems and stringent environmental requirements.
“Through Malvern’s global sales organization, customers worldwide will have access to the full range of solutions, all backed by the company’s extensive technical and applications support network.”
Viscotek’s present management team will continue to lead the business, which will operate as Viscotek Corporation, a Malvern Company.

Triple Detector Array (TDA) with LALS and UV-VIS
Thursday, November 01, 2007
The Triple Detector Array (TDA™) sets the standard for GPC/SEC technology and is the preferred method for characterizing natural and synthetic polymers and proteins. The TDA employs a concentration detector, viscometer and light scattering detector acting in concert, with each detector providing complimentary but different information.
The new TDA combines the power of traditional triple detection with all new UV-VIS and Low Angle Light Scattering (LALS) options. Measure concentration with an RI, UV or both. When used simultaneously, the RI and UV provide information necessary for the determination of copolymer composition.
LALS, a breakthrough in light scattering technology, is the only GPC detection method that provides absolute molecular weights without extrapolation or correction. Operating at an angle of 7° (degrees), LALS directly measures molecular weight for an extensive range of natural and synthetic polymers and proteins.

Molecular Weight in Three Minutes
Saturday, September 01, 2007
Viscotek’s Flow Injection Polymer Analysis (FIPA) technique delivers fast and accurate average molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity in 3–5 minutes — without the need for elaborate sample preparation. FIPA provides the perfect complement to your current testing methods. Short sample turn-around time means it can be used for high throughput screening as well as routine process and quality control.
The control of the polymerization process requires fast turnaround time for sequential measurements of the extent of reaction. FIPA measures polymer concentrations, molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity of a solution or emulsion reactor sample in less than five minutes. The typical system consists of a pump, an injector, a FIPA column and the Viscotek Triple Detector Array (TDA). The TDA combines a light scattering detector, viscometer detector and refractometer in a single integrated unit with fixed inter-detector volumes and temperature control.

Autosampler
Wednesday, August 01, 2007
The Vortex™ autosampler from Viscotek consists of an integrated autosampling device and multi-stirrer and is designed to increase efficiency, enhance precision and promote operator safety. The temperature controlled, heated (up to 150 C) multi-stirrer assembly features a stainless steel tray, capable of handling both 20 ml and 40 ml vials. Each vial position has its own magnetic stirring mechanism, delivering consistent and reproducible stirring action from vial-to-vial and eliminating variability due to the dissolution process. When coupled with Viscotek’s Triple Detector Array (TDA™) or Relative Viscometer, the Vortex provides a complete, automated system for macromolecular characterization and determination of solution viscosities.
A new addition to Viscotek's comprehensive range of GPC/SEC solutions, the Vortex will allow chemists to concentrate on testing and data analysis, rather than time consuming and tedious sample preparation.

RImax Conventional GPC/SEC System
Thursday, February 01, 2007
Conventional Calibration is the most widely practiced form of GPC because of its simplicity. It employs a concentration detector, typically a Refractive Index (RI) Detector or UV/VIS, and a calibrated GPC/SEC column to obtain the relative molecular weight, size and polydispersity of natural or synthetic polymers, copolymers and proteins.
Viscotek announces their new RImax Conventional GPC/SEC System featuring an RI Detector used for measuring concentration, or a UV/VIS for measuring the concentration of polymeric samples or proteins having a UV chromaphore, or both an RI and UV for copolymer analysis. It also include a GPCmax Integrated Pump, Autosampler and Degasser Module specifically designed for GPC/SEC applications, and OmniSEC CFR 21 part 11 compliant software for complete system control, data acquisition, analysis and reporting.
Though simple and easy to use, the information content in conventional analysis is limited and the molecular weight obtained is always relative to the standards which have been used to calibrate the column. To obtain an absolute molecular weight, size and intrinsic viscosity, as well as information on structure, conformation, aggregation and branching, advanced detectors such as Viscotek’s light scattering and viscometer detectors can be added to a RImax Conventional System to create a Triple or Tetra Detector system.

Tetra Detector Array with UV-LS-RI-VISC
Monday, January 01, 2007
The Tetra Detector Array represents the ultimate in GPC/SEC multiple detection technology for the characterization of natural and synthetic polymers, biopolymers and proteins. It consists of a patent-pending, revolutionary Low Angle Light Scattering (LALS) detector, four capillary viscometer detector, patent-pending refractometer and selectable wavelength UV/VIS. All the detectors, as well as the GPC columns, are contained within a heated oven compartment with temperature control to 80 degrees C, which means your sample never sees a variation in temperature. The integration and unique, proprietary arrangement of detectors (UV-LS-RI-VISC) insures minimal inter-detector volumes and reduced band-broadening, as well as eliminating the dilution effect and viscometer breakthrough experienced when the RI is placed last in the series.
In a single GPC/SEC experiment, obtain absolute molecular weight, molecular size (to less than 1 nm), and intrinsic viscosity, as well as information on branching, conformation, aggregation and copolymer composition.
